November is Diabetes Awareness Month! Did you know TYPE 1 Diabetes is an Autoimmune Disease? Please read below and I welcome your story IF you would like to share.
This one is very near and dear to my heart and soul and the purpose behind my studio. My son was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of seven. Life changing for sure! The short story is that Type 1 (T1D) is an Autoimmune Disease with no known cause or cure. A person with T1D requires insulin to cover EVERY carb consumed in order to survive. There are tools available to manage your blood sugars and to administer insulin, such as a continuous glucose monitor (he has a Dexcom) and insulin pumps (like the OmniPod). The pancreas of someone with Type 1 Diabetes no longer produces insulin so it MUST be administered throughout the day and night to avoid DKA (Diabetic Ketoacidosis), which can be life threatening if left untreated. Careful calculations are required to know how much insulin is needed to avoid going too high or low with your blood sugars. Eating certain foods or lifestyle changes will NOT cure Type 1 Diabetes.
This wreath collection is to support the Diabetic Community to help raise awareness; a conversation piece to open up talks about this illness that requires 24/7 monitoring.
